An all-Ireland charity that promotes the conservation of bats and their habitats
Adrià López-Baucells will give our next Thursday Talk on – “Rice farmers that got along with soprano pipistrelles: a nice story of a friendship”.
Adrià, is a National Geographic Explorer, who is establishing a new project based in Madagascar, whose farmers are totally dependent on subsistence farming. They experience big problems of harvest loss, along with heavily threatened bat populations, due to vast deforestation. As bats are well-known to be excellent pest controllers, his team are working to assess the effectiveness of bats as pest suppressors in rural areas, using bat boxes and field experiments, while promoting bat conservation among local villagers and farmers.
