An all-Ireland charity that promotes the conservation of bats and their habitats
To celebrate Heritage Week 2024, and in recognition of Community Heritage Funding received to restore the gates at St Flannan’s Cathedral and Graveyard, there will be a Bat Walk guided by Anna Collins of Bat Conservation Ireland & Kildare Bat Group on Saturday 24th August at 8.30pm. This event will commence in St Flannan’s Cathedral with a brief talk about the wonder of bats and the equipment we will use to detect them on the walk. It will then progress through St Flannan’s Graveyard and all along the Killaloe Canal, learning as we go about these fascinating flying mammals, detecting them with bat detectors and sighting the different species as they go out foraging for the night. This will be a 60+ minute walk over some waterside bumpy terrain at dusk and in darkness, waterproof walking wear is recommended. It is not suitable for any wheeled modes of transport such as bicycles or scooters as noise from these will be picked up by the bat detectors. The walk is not suitable for young children due to its proximity to the waterside in low light conditions.
